Abstract

Instructional Speech Actions and Teachers' Speaking Strategies in Learning News Texts in Class VII MTsN 2 Padang City

This study aims to describe the forms of directive speech acts and teachers’ discourse strategies in news text instruction in the 7th grade at MTsN 2 Padang. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method, with data collected using the Simak Bebas Libat Cakap (SBLC) technique, recording, and note-taking. The data and data sources in this study consist of the Indonesian language teacher’s utterances during the teaching and learning process in news text instruction in Grade VII at MTsN 2 Padang City. Based on the analysis of the teacher’s utterances, 57 imperative speech acts, 8 requestive speech acts, 5 demanding speech acts, 11 suggestive speech acts, and 29 challenging speech acts were identified. The speech strategies used by the teacher in the news text learning process in Grade VII at MTsN 2 Padang totaled 110 utterances, consisting of 40 direct utterances without pleasantries, 55 utterances with positive politeness, 11 utterances with negative politeness, and 4 ambiguous utterances.. The results of this study indicate that the use of directive speech acts accompanied by appropriate speech strategies can help the learning process run smoothly, foster an interactive classroom atmosphere, and create effective learning interactions.
