Abstract

DIRECTIVE SPEECH ACTS AND TEACHER SPEECH STRATEGIES IN LEARNING SHORT STORY TEXTS IN GRADE VIII OF SMP NEGERI 1 LUNANG

This research is motivated by the importance of implementing speech acts in Indonesian language learning to build effective communication between teachers and students. However, the use of directive speech acts by teachers is not optimal due to insufficient attention to the learning context, student readiness, and the choice of speaking strategies. This study aims to describe (1) the forms of directive speech acts and (2) speaking strategies in learning short story texts in class VIII SMP Negeri 1 Lunang. The study used a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. Data in the form of teacher directive utterances collected through the technique of free listening, recording, and note-taking, then analyzed through the stages of transcription, identification, classification, analysis, and drawing conclusions. The results of the study showed five forms of directive speech acts, namely ordering, requesting, demanding, suggesting, and challenging, with the most dominant form of ordering. Speaking strategies include direct without further ado, direct with positive and negative politeness, and vague strategies. These findings indicate that teachers tend to use direct speech, but have not fully adapted to the conditions of students. Thus, the use of directive speech acts and speaking strategies still needs to be optimized so that learning communication is more effective and encourages student involvement.
