Abstract

The Effect of the Outdoor Learning Model on the Descriptive Writing Skills of Seventh-Grade Student at SMP Negeri 3 Bukittinggi        

This study is motivated by the low level of students’ descriptive writing skills, as indicated by difficulties in developing ideas, organizing text structures systematically, and using proper spelling and diction. In addition, the learning process, which is still dominated by conventional methods, causes students to be less active and limits their opportunities to gain meaningful learning experiences. Therefore, an innovative and contextual learning model is needed, one of which is outdoor learning. This study aims to determine the effect of the outdoor learning model on the descriptive writing skills of seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 3 Bukittinggi. The results show that the descriptive writing skills of students in the experimental class are categorized as good, with an average score of 76.98, while the control class falls into the fair to good category but has not yet reached optimal performance. In detail, the experimental class demonstrates better performance in terms of text structure, content development, and the use of spelling compared to the control class. The results of hypothesis testing indicate that there is a significant effect of the outdoor learning model on students’ descriptive writing skills. This model provides direct learning experiences that help students observe real objects, making it easier for them to develop ideas and organize their writing in a more detailed and systematic way. In conclusion, the outdoor learning model is effective as an alternative instructional strategy to improve students’ descriptive writing skills in a more optimal and meaningful way.
